Evan goes to a neighboring pack to help strengthen ties since their alphas have mated. Despite his excitement about meeting new people—and potentially a mate—he doesn’t make many friends right away. Lots of old pack rules have changed recently, and after a suggestion from a fellow beta, Evan begins to wonder if he’s been looking in the wrong place for a mate. He was popular with the omegas in his other pack, but maybe another beta is just the change of pace he needs…

  Chapter One

Evan leaned against one of the common buildings and watched Toby walking hand-in-hand with Luke. It made his chest ache a little, yet he still smiled. Toby wanted pups. He deserved them, along with a good, strong man to care for him. Evan had been surprised to see Toby arrive when Luke returned to check on his daughter after her tumble, which had happened a matter of days after Evan’s own arrival weeks ago, but he’d heard enough people praise Luke to know he was a good man, and exactly the kind of wolf someone as sweet as Toby needed. They’d made their mating official just a few days before, and Evan felt very happy about it.

Evan gazed around, hoping someone in this pack would finally stand out to him. He didn’t expect something dramatic—eyes meeting across a crowded room or anything—but part of him did want that immediate spark, the kind he’d never had with anyone before. His head knew it wouldn’t be that way, but something inside him wanted some kind of sign.

“Still pining for the little omega?” a voice beside him asked. “He is awful cute.”

Evan looked over at Gareth and smiled. Gareth was the brother of the guy Evan had switched cabins with for this little inter-pack exchange, and he lived right next door to Evan.

“No, not pining at all. I’m happy for Toby. He’s real sweet, and I’m glad he’s with someone who’ll be good to him. I felt kind of jealous at first, but it faded as I learned more about Luke.”

Gareth grinned. “Oh, Luke’s great. He’ll be good to him. It’s way past time Luke took a mate and fathered some more pups. He loves children.”

“Which is perfect for Toby.” Evan continued watching others move around the square. “I’m glad things are going well between our packs.”

“They seem to be. I was a little worried at first.”

  “You were?”

“Yeah. But we haven’t had many conflicts so far. Which I’m very glad of.”

Evan nodded, still looking around at the other wolves.

“So, if you aren’t eating your heart out over Toby, can I assume you’re on the prowl?” Gareth said.

Evan laughed. “Of course.” Then he smiled. “We all know what this is about. Mating. I’m not ready for pups yet, but I’m open to the right opportunity.” He looked around a moment before adding, “I’ve been stalling and standing still too long.”

Gareth gave a little shrug and said, “Maybe you should find another beta then, if you don’t want pups right away. All the rules have changed now. Embrace it.” He started to turn away but then halted and turned back. “And try to get laid. Clear the pipes.”

“Clear the pipes?” Evan said, laughing.

“Yeah. You’re thinking too much. It’s too much pressure.”

  “I won’t explode.”

“Hope not. I helped build that cabin. I’ll be pretty pissed it you wreck it.” He gave a little wave and moved off again.

Evan chuckled as Gareth walked away, but then he thought about it. If he mated with a beta, pups would only come if the beta was female. But if the beta were male, they could bring someone else into their bed. More than anything, Evan loved exhibitionism. His first time had been with a girl, but in general he preferred men. Omegas tended to be bisexual, but he was a beta and definitely felt he’d settled on the side of wanting a male mate. Betas usually experimented to find their way, eventually settling down to pursue one sex only, though that wasn’t always the case. He’d had dinner with Gareth and his sister, Rena, and she was very beautiful. But there hadn’t been any spark beyond friendship. They’d hung out a while after dinner, but when Gareth had headed home, Evan had helped Rena do some dishes real quick but hadn’t been tempted to stay any longer.

He’d been in Thomas’s pack nearly a month and actually hadn’t had sex yet. He hadn’t gone that long in a while. His own pack had lots of omegas at the moment, and when they went into heat, lots of them sought him out, especially the ones who enjoyed ménage sex. Mating another beta would certainly leave the door for that open, even in an official mating. It was perfectly acceptable for male alphas and betas who mated to bring in a woman or a male omega to conceive children, though some couples didn’t like the idea. His alpha Gideon had mated this pack’s alpha, Thomas, and they were going to name the children of Thomas’s bother, an omega named Noah, as their heirs because they didn’t want another in their bed. Evan could understand that, but he’d never had a problem with jealousy when it came to sharing. Maybe he could find a like-minded male here…

  Maybe.

Images of a cute little omega male being pleasured between him and another beta filled his head briefly. He’d never been inside an omega at the same time as another man, though he’d always wanted to try that.

It could be nice. Three of us to care for the pups. To be there for each other. To love each other. Please each other. It could work.

Evan pushed away from the building and strolled around. Everyone in the pack had been welcoming, but Gareth and Rena were the only friends he’d really made. Evan nodded to everyone he passed, but he didn’t try to strike up a conversation with anyone. Horny as he was, he didn’t feel much like flirting. His brief fantasy, and Gareth’s words, had him thinking now. What did he want? An omega? Another beta? Maybe both?

Maybe. Gotta find one before I start thinking about two.

These thoughts swirled in his head as he slowly walked home. He had been on the prowl, but his heart hadn’t exactly been in it. He’d volunteered for this exchange imagining lots of sex with lots of new people, yet he hadn’t acted on that. Most of his friends back in his own pack would be shocked. Evan certainly was.

He went inside the cabin and locked up before turning on the lights in the living room. He grabbed a book and started reading, but by the fourth page, he was just staring at wo
rds and not really reading.

His gaze wandered around the room. He tried to picture what it would be like if he had a mate. Would they sit up reading together? Or watching movies? Would they want to go to bed at the same time, or would one of them stay up later? Would they have sex more at night when they went to bed, or in the morning when they woke up?

Evan put the book aside and rubbed his cock through his jeans. His mind drifted to Toby and his new mate again. That’s what I want. Someone to care for, some to care for me. A man who’ll make me smile with just a look.

Evan sighed and rose to turn out the lights. Once in the bedroom, he stripped naked and went into the bathroom. He stroked his cock slowly, envisioning a slow coupling between him and another man.

A beta. A big, strong, muscular man who could easily flip him over and reverse their positions.

Evan came with a loud moan as he leaned over and braced himself on the counter. It felt good to empty himself, though he chuckled as he thought about Gareth had said.

“Clearing the pipes indeed,” he muttered to himself with another chuckle.

Once he’d cleaned up, he slipped into bed, his thoughts still focused on the possibilities before him.

  * * * *

Evan tried his best to be friendly the next day, but still, no one really caught his attention. He’d helped Gareth repair a fence, but that hadn’t been that exciting either. Evan was starting to wonder if Gareth was right about him thinking too much. Finding a mate wasn’t a requirement or anything. It was only a suggestion. Making friends and working together was the number one priority. He looked around the square a moment before starting to head back to his cabin.

  “Hey, Evan?” a voice called.

Evan stopped and saw a large male beta coming toward him. He couldn’t recall the man’s name, though he had seen him before. “Yeah?”

The guy held his hand out. “I’m Reece. In charge of patrolling.”

The name was familiar at least, and Evan nodded. “Yeah. Gareth has mentioned you.”

“You still willing to help out some while you’re here? Ben, my usual partner, has a pregnant mate at home, ready to deliver any day now,” Reece said.

“That’s great for him. Must be exciting.”

Reece laughed. “He’s terrified, but it’ll be fine once the baby comes.” He let his gaze travel over Evan. “So, can you start tonight?”

Evan nodded in response to the request. “Sure. I’m free now.” He paused before adding, “Most nights, really.”

“Good. I need someone steady until Ben is free again. I figured we’d walk the perimeter now.”

  “Sounds fine to me.”

They fell into step together. Reece had blond-streaked red hair and bright green eyes, which stood out in the pack full of dark-haired men and women. He was big and well muscled, and he walked with confidence, which Evan liked.

Just the kind of guy I was picturing. He licked his lips as he tried to check Reece out without being too obvious. He’d never cared about being obvious before, but if he was wrong, working with this guy would be awkward. He didn’t usually have trouble talking to men, but he didn’t know what to talk about right now.

“Do you have many problems with campers or anything?” Evan asked eventually. “I helped Gareth fix a fence earlier. Looked like someone had broken part of it trying to climb over it.”

“We don’t have much activity with outsiders. The fences on this side are good, and the public lands are far enough away no one ventures very close. And Bill Jensen keeps a good eye on his land. We rarely have any trouble. We try to act friendly when people pass on the water.”

Evan nodded. “Yeah, we wave to folks. Try to look ordinary. Minding our own business.”

“There’s more water around your pack’s lands. Do many people come to shore?”

“Every now and then. But there’s never been any trouble. We try to look more like a hippie commune than a weird religious cult. Thus far, no one’s been too nosy. But it is hard some days.”

Reece said, “We’re deeper in the woods than you guys are. Most of the time, the people who get this deep want to be left alone, too.”

“I don’t think I could live in a city. I like quiet too much.”

“You think we’ll ever come out to the world the way shifters do in books and movies?”

“I don’t know. Sounds scary to me.”

Reece shrugged. “Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad.”

“But if it went sideways, there aren’t enough of us around the world to fight back. We could be locked up and studied. Experimented on. Regular wolves could be endangered, too.”

Reece frowned. “I hadn’t thought about that last part. Not really.”

“It might happen, but probably not in our lifetime.”

“You never know. Technology is really changing everything.” Reece glanced over at him. “Lots of things are changing.”

Their gazes met for a moment, and Evan gave Reece a slight smile. Was the guy coming on to him, or just commenting? He was good looking, so Evan wasn’t opposed to the idea. Hadn’t Gareth said another beta might be exactly what he needed? That thought had been swirling in his head all day. If the guy had invited him along with seduction in mind, Evan would not reject him.

“They certainly are.” Evan gave him a broader smile with his reply.

Reece licked his lower lip before asking, “You like it here so far?”

“It’s not so different from my pack. Just don’t know many people. Gareth’s nice, and I’ve settled in okay.”

“Got your eye on anyone?” Reece held his gaze as he asked this question.

Evan hesitated, wanting to jump on the seemingly leading question yet curious about how interested Reece truly was. “Not yet.”

Reece shrugged. “That’s kind of what this is about. Strengthen our ties.”

  “You have a mate?”

  “Nope.”

Evan didn’t reply, letting the word hang there to see what Reece would say or do next.

Reece eyed him. “I haven’t met the right person yet. Not sure I’m ready for pups and all. But a mate? I think I’d welcome that.”

  Evan only nodded.

“You have any children back in your pack?”

“No. None yet. I’m not in a hurry either.”

Low moans met their ears, and they both stopped. Inching forward, Reece looked around a dense clump of bushes. Curious, Evan joined him. Evan’s mouth fell open when he saw an omega being fucked by two men at the same time. The omega straddled one man and rode his cock while the man behind him drove in and out of him as well. Both men fondled and caressed the omega, the man on his back stroking the omega’s cock while the other kissed the omega’s neck.

Evan and Reece moved away as quietly as they could, but the moans followed them for a bit. When they died away, Evan asked, “You come across people like that a lot?” He’d been imagining that kind of scene since last night, and now he really hoped Reece was coming on to him. Going back home to nothing but his own hand didn’t have much appeal as he looked over at the other beta.

“All the time.” He adjusted his pants. “Gets to me a bit, but it’s not really that embarrassing anymore. I mean, if you’re fucking out here, you don’t care if someone sees, do you?”

“Guess not.” Evan’s pants felt pretty tight as well, but he didn’t say anything about that because Reece kept walking.

They came to a fence and stopped. “This is the Jensen property,” Reece said. “From here we go south and circle back around.”

“Ever much trouble within the pack?”

“Nah. Some lovers’ spats now and then.”

  “What kind? Just people fighting?”

“Yeah. Couple has an argument, and one person runs out here. The other chases them, and they keep fighting. Some cheating happens.”

  “Mated couples, you mean?”

“Yeah. One of them gets pissed and grabs a willing omega. Takes them out here to fu
ck. Then there’s the walk of shame back home. Stupid, really.”

“In Gideon’s pack, you can dissolve a matehood if you catch your mate cheating.”

“You can do that here, too, but Thomas likes to try to make people reconcile, especially if there are pups.” Reece shrugged. “I don’t know what gets into people. I couldn’t do that to my mate. I’m gonna mean it when I tell everyone he’s mine. It’s going to be forever.”

The declaration turned Evan on, but it also made him wonder if he was reading Reece correctly. If this guy wanted romance and “forever”, was he up for some action tonight? Had he had his eye on Evan? That idea turned him on even more, but he felt he was getting way ahead of himself. Must be because I haven’t been fucking. My brain’s getting addled. Yet he had to ask, “What if he was a beta? What about pups? Would you still wanna try to have some?”

Reece chewed his lower lip a moment before glancing over. “I guess I could take a third. Like those guys we just saw. The guy on the bottom is mated to the omega, and when things changed, they hooked up with the other beta. Live together and everything. They’re planning a family, I hear.”

“Looks like they were working on it.”

Reece laughed softly. “Yeah.” He paused and added, “If the third person stayed, I wouldn’t be jealous. I want my pups to have a solid family.”

Evan noticed he’d said person, not man. “You go both ways? Like men and women?”

  Reece grinned. “Don’t we all?”

“Not in my experience. Most betas and alphas settle on liking one sex. Eventually, you know.”
